Land all four fingers at once. If B is quieter, the little finger is too flat.

A three-note C#7

C#7 C# E# B

Drop the fifth and keep C# E# B: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "C#7".

How to practise C#7

  1. Play C#, E#, G#, B slowly in root position and say "C#7" each time.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (E# G# B C#, G# B C# E#, B C# E# G#) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Loop G#m7 → C#7 → F#maj7 until the change into and out of C#7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

A few minutes every day on C#7 beat one long session a week.

Where C#7 goes

  • C#7 is the V7 chord of F# major and of F# minor: it pulls into F# / F#m.
  • In a ii-V-I in F# major it is the middle chord: G#m7 → C#7 → F#maj7.
  • Between E# and B there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. G7 has the same two notes, so it can replace C#7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: G#m7 → C#7 → F#maj7 · C#
