Dmaj7 fingering, both hands

Right hand1 (thumb)235 (little)
Left hand5 (little)321 (thumb)

Land all four fingers at once. If C# is quieter, the little finger is too flat.

Dmaj7 without the fifth

Dmaj7 D F# C#

Drop the fifth and keep D F# C#: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Dmaj7".

How to practise Dmaj7

  1. Start in root position: D, F#, A, C#, four times, eyes on the symbol.
  2. Climb the four positions: D F# A C#, then F# A C# D, A C# D F# and C# D F# A, and back down.
  3. Play it in its ii-V-I, Em7 → A7 → Dmaj7, four beats per chord.
  4. Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.

Short daily rounds fix Dmaj7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

What Dmaj7 does in music

  • Dmaj7 is the Imaj7 of D major and the IVmaj7 of A major.
  • It is where a ii-V-I in D major lands: Em7 → A7 → Dmaj7.
  • Inside Dmaj7 sits F#m (F# A C#): play F#m over D in the bass and you get Dmaj7.

ii-V-I: Em7 → A7 → Dmaj7 · D

Common questions

What notes are in the D major 7th chord?

Dmaj7 has four notes: D, F#, A, C#. Root, major third, perfect fifth and major seventh (formula 1 3 5 7).

Can I play Dmaj7 with three notes?

Yes. Leave out the fifth and play D F# C#: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Dmaj7 and is easier for the left hand.

Where does Dmaj7 go?

Dmaj7 is the Imaj7 of D major and the IVmaj7 of A major. It is where a ii-V-I in D major lands: Em7 → A7 → Dmaj7.

Can I practise Dmaj7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Dmaj7 counts in any inversion, as long as D, F#, A, C# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
