Play Dm7 broken first, D, F, A, C one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.

Dm7 D F C

The fifth (A) adds little colour. D F C is enough to sound like Dm7 and is far easier to reach.

What Dm7 does in music

  • Dm7 is the ii chord of C major, the iii of Bb major and the vi of F major.
  • As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7.
  • Dm7 has the same notes as F6 (F A C D): with D in the bass it is Dm7, with F in the bass it is F6.

ii-V-I: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 · Dm

Learning Dm7 step by step

  1. Play D, F, A, C slowly in root position and say "Dm7" each time.
  2. Climb the four positions: D F A C, then F A C D, A C D F and C D F A, and back down.
  3. Loop Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 until the change into and out of Dm7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

Short daily rounds fix Dm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
