G7 Chord on Piano (G Dominant 7th)

G dominant 7th (G7) is spelled G - B - D - F. It sounds like G with an extra F, the note that gives it its restless dominant colour. Here you will find its inversions, both hands and the chords it belongs with.

How to play G7 on the piano

HandGBDF
Right hand1 (thumb)235 (little)
Left hand5 (little)321 (thumb)

Land all four fingers at once. If F is quieter, the little finger is too flat.

A three-note G7

G7 G B F

The fifth (D) adds little colour. G B F is enough to sound like G7 and is far easier to reach.

A 5-minute G7 routine

  1. Play G, B, D, F slowly in root position and say "G7" each time.
  2. Climb the four positions: G B D F, then B D F G, D F G B and F G B D, and back down.
  3. Play it in its ii-V-I, Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7, four beats per chord.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

A few minutes every day on G7 beat one long session a week.

Where G7 goes

  • G7 is the V7 chord of C major and of C minor: it pulls into C / Cm.
  • In a ii-V-I in C major it is the middle chord: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7.
  • Between B and F there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. C#7 has the same two notes, so it can replace G7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 · G
