G Minor 7th Chord on Piano (Gm7)
G minor 7th (Gm7) is spelled G - Bb - D - F. It sounds like Gm with an extra F, the note that gives it its soft, warm colour. Here you will find its inversions, both hands and the chords it belongs with.

Gm7 in keys and progressions
- Gm7 is the ii chord of F major, the iii of Eb major and the vi of Bb major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Gm7 → C7 → Fmaj7.
- Gm7 has the same notes as Bb6 (Bb D F G): with G in the bass it is Gm7, with Bb in the bass it is Bb6.
Gm7 inversions on the keyboard
In the 3rd inversion F is the lowest note: the seventh in the bass.
Root position: G Bb D F
1st inversion: Bb D F G
2nd inversion: D F G Bb
3rd inversion: F G Bb D
How to practise Gm7
- Play G, Bb, D, F slowly in root position and say "Gm7" each time.
- Walk up through the inversions (Bb D F G, D F G Bb, F G Bb D) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Gm7 → C7 → Fmaj7 until the change into and out of Gm7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
Short daily rounds fix Gm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
Gm7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | G | Bb | D | F |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play G alone in the left hand and Bb D F in the right.
A three-note Gm7
The fifth (D) adds little colour. G Bb F is enough to sound like Gm7 and is far easier to reach.
Make Gm7 automatic

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Gm7 counts in any inversion, as long as G, Bb, D, F sound together.
