Playing Gm7b5 with each hand
| Hand | G | Bb | Db | F |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If F is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
The light version of Gm7b5
Root, flat fifth, seventh: G Db F. It already sounds like Gm7b5 and moves smoothly to the next chord.

Play the demoCommon questions
What is the difference between Gm7b5 and Gdim?
Gm7b5 adds one note to the Gdim triad: F, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
Can I play Gm7b5 with three notes?
Yes. Keep root, flat fifth and seventh, G Db F, and leave out the third. The flat fifth is what makes it half-diminished.
Where does Gm7b5 go?
Gm7b5 is the iiø7 of F minor and the viiø7 of Ab major. In a minor ii-V-i it opens the cadence: Gm7b5 → C7 → Fm.
Can I practise Gm7b5 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Gm7b5 counts in any inversion, as long as G, Bb, Db, F sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
