How to play Dm7 on the piano
| Hand | D | F | A | C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Play Dm7 broken first, D, F, A, C one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.
Dm7 without the fifth
The fifth (A) adds little colour. D F C is enough to sound like Dm7 and is far easier to reach.
How Dm7 differs from the other 7th chords on D
One note changes and the chord gets a new name.
What Dm7 does in music
- Dm7 is the ii chord of C major, the iii of Bb major and the vi of F major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7.
- Dm7 has the same notes as F6 (F A C D): with D in the bass it is Dm7, with F in the bass it is F6.
Learning Dm7 step by step
- Play D, F, A, C slowly in root position and say "Dm7" each time.
- Climb the four positions: D F A C, then F A C D, A C D F and C D F A, and back down.
- Loop Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7 until the change into and out of Dm7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
Short daily rounds fix Dm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
