Ebadd9 and Ebsus2
Take Ebsus2 (Eb F Bb) and add the third G: you have Ebadd9. That is why Ebadd9 still sounds major, while Ebsus2 does not.
When to play Ebadd9
- Ebadd9 fits wherever Eb fits: Eb major, Bb major and Ab major.
- Pop and worship songs use it in place of plain Eb to make a simple progression sound fuller.
Practise Ebadd9 in four steps
- Find Eb, then add the other notes one at a time: Eb, G, Bb and F.
- Switch between Eb and Ebadd9 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Five minutes a day is enough to make Ebadd9 feel easy.
