E Flat Diminished Chord on Piano (Ebdim)

E flat diminished (Ebdim) is spelled Eb - Gb - Bbb: root, minor 3rd and diminished 5th. Its sound is tense, so it rarely stays long before moving on. Here is where Ebdim comes from, where it resolves and how to play it with both hands.

What Ebdim does in music

  • Ebdim is the vii° chord of E major (as D#dim) and the ii° chord of C# minor (as D#dim).
  • It wants to move up a semitone: Ebdim (D#dim) → E / Em, the bottom note rising to the new root.
  • Add Db and you get Ebm7b5 (half-diminished); add Dbb instead and you get Ebdim7 (diminished 7th).

Common questions

How do you play Ebdim on the piano?

Press Eb, Gb, Bbb together: right hand 1-3-5 with the thumb on Eb, left hand 5-3-1 with the little finger on Eb.

What is the difference between Ebdim and Ebm?

One note. Ebm has Bb on top; Ebdim moves it to Bbb. The new fifth is what gives Ebdim its tense sound.

Where does Ebdim go?

Ebdim is the vii° chord of E major (as D#dim) and the ii° chord of C# minor (as D#dim). It wants to move up a semitone: Ebdim (D#dim) → E / Em, the bottom note rising to the new root.

Can I practise Ebdim with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. Ebdim counts in any position, as long as Eb, Gb, Bbb sound together.
