Eb7 Chord on Piano (E Flat Dominant 7th)
E flat dominant 7th (Eb7) is spelled Eb - G - Bb - Db. It sounds like Eb with an extra Db, the note that gives it its restless dominant colour. Here you will find its inversions, both hands and the chords it belongs with.

Eb7 inversions on the keyboard
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still Eb7.
Root position: Eb G Bb Db
1st inversion: G Bb Db Eb
2nd inversion: Bb Db Eb G
3rd inversion: Db Eb G Bb
Playing Eb7 with each hand
| Hand | Eb | G | Bb | Db |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If Db is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
A three-note Eb7
The fifth (Bb) adds little colour. Eb G Db is enough to sound like Eb7 and is far easier to reach.
Four 7th chords on Eb
One note changes and the chord gets a new name.
Where Eb7 goes
- Eb7 is the V7 chord of Ab major and of Ab minor: it pulls into Ab / Abm.
- In a ii-V-I in Ab major it is the middle chord: Bbm7 → Eb7 → Abmaj7.
- Between G and Db there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. A7 has the same two notes, so it can replace Eb7 (tritone substitution).
A 5-minute Eb7 routine
- Play Eb, G, Bb, Db slowly in root position and say "Eb7" each time.
- Walk up through the inversions (G Bb Db Eb, Bb Db Eb G, Db Eb G Bb) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Bbm7 → Eb7 → Abmaj7 until the change into and out of Eb7 is clean.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
A few minutes every day on Eb7 beat one long session a week.
