Four ways to play Emaj7
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still Emaj7.
Root position: E G# B D#
1st inversion: G# B D# E
2nd inversion: B D# E G#
3rd inversion: D# E G# B
Emaj7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | E | G# | B | D# |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Play Emaj7 broken first, E, G#, B, D# one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.
Emaj7 without the fifth
The fifth (B) adds little colour. E G# D# is enough to sound like Emaj7 and is far easier to reach.

Same root, same fifth: watch the third and the seventh.
How to practise Emaj7
- Start in root position: E, G#, B, D#, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: E G# B D#, then G# B D# E, B D# E G# and D# E G# B, and back down.
- Loop F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7 until the change into and out of Emaj7 is clean.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
A few minutes every day on Emaj7 beat one long session a week.
Train Emaj7 in a game
ChordRunner sends Emaj7 at you between other chords and checks every note you play. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

What notes are in the E major 7th chord?
Emaj7 has four notes: E, G#, B, D#. Root, major third, perfect fifth and major seventh (formula 1 3 5 7).
Can I play Emaj7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play E G# D#: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Emaj7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does Emaj7 go?
Emaj7 is the Imaj7 of E major and the IVmaj7 of B major. It is where a ii-V-I in E major lands: F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7.
Can I practise Emaj7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Emaj7 counts in any inversion, as long as E, G#, B, D# sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
