F Augmented Chord on Piano (Faug)

Where Faug goes

  • Faug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of D minor.
  • Its thirds are equal, so Faug, Aaug and C#aug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.
  • A common move is F → Faug → Bb: the raised fifth C# pushes up to D.

Common questions

How do you play Faug on the piano?

Press F, A, C# together: right hand 1-3-5 with the thumb on F, left hand 5-3-1 with the little finger on F.

What is the difference between Faug and F?

One note. F has C on top; Faug moves it to C#. The new fifth is what gives Faug its floating, unresolved sound.

Where does Faug go?

Faug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of D minor. Its thirds are equal, so Faug, Aaug and C#aug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.

Can I practise Faug with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. Faug counts in any position, as long as F, A, C# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
