F#maj7 inversions on the keyboard
Move F# up an octave for the 1st inversion, then A# for the 2nd, then C# for the 3rd.
Root position: F# A# C# E#
1st inversion: A# C# E# F#
2nd inversion: C# E# F# A#
3rd inversion: E# F# A# C#
A 5-minute F#maj7 routine
- Start in root position: F#, A#, C#, E#, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: F# A# C# E#, then A# C# E# F#, C# E# F# A# and E# F# A# C#, and back down.
- Loop G#m7 → C#7 → F#maj7 until the change into and out of F#maj7 is clean.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
Short daily rounds fix F#maj7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
How F#maj7 differs from the other 7th chords on F#
Same root, same fifth: watch the third and the seventh.
F#maj7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | F# | A# | C# | E# |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play F# alone in the left hand and A# C# E# in the right.
A three-note F#maj7
Root, third, seventh: F# A# E#. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.
Make F#maj7 automatic
ChordRunner sends F#maj7 at you between other chords and checks every note you play. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

What is the difference between F#maj7 and F#?
F#maj7 adds one note to the F# triad: E#, the major seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
Can I play F#maj7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play F# A# E#: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like F#maj7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does F#maj7 go?
F#maj7 is the Imaj7 of F# major and the IVmaj7 of C# major. It is where a ii-V-I in F# major lands: G#m7 → C#7 → F#maj7.
Can I practise F#maj7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. F#maj7 counts in any inversion, as long as F#, A#, C#, E# sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
