A second name for the same keys
Above the root F# sit four notes that form A#m7b5: A# C# E G#. A pianist can play F# with the left hand and A#m7b5 with the right, and the result is F#9.
The formula of F#9
Every chord is a recipe of scale steps. For F#9 the recipe is 1 3 5 b7 9, counted from F#.

F#9 in every position
Each picture is still F#9. Move only the notes that must move.

Rootless, 7th on the bottom: E G# A# C#
Left hand alone: F# E
Fingering
| Left hand | F# E | 5 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Right hand | A# C# G# | 1 2 4 |
Make F#9 automatic
- Say the notes out loud while you press them: F#, A#, C#, E and G#.
- Switch between F#7 and F#9 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and a rootless shape with the 3rd on the bottom, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Five minutes a day is enough to make F#9 feel easy.
Where F#9 is used
- F#9 is the V chord of B major: it pulls home to B.
- Many pianists play F#9 whenever F#7 appears, because the 9th makes the same pull sound richer.
