Piano Games with a Keyboard

Looking for piano games you play with a keyboard? There are two kinds of keyboard: the computer keyboard, where letters stand in for piano keys, and a real piano keyboard (MIDI keyboard or digital piano) connected by USB. ChordRunner is made for the second: plug it in and the browser game hears every chord you play.

No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.

No MIDI keyboard? ChordRunner also listens to an acoustic or digital piano through the microphone.

How to connect a keyboard to a piano game online

  1. Use a USB cable from the keyboard (USB-B or USB-C port) to the computer. Older keyboards with 5-pin MIDI ports need a MIDI-to-USB interface.
  2. Open the game in Chrome or Edge: they support Web MIDI, the browser standard that reads keyboards directly. No driver is needed for most class-compliant keyboards.
  3. Play a note: ChordRunner detects the keyboard automatically.
  4. Tablet or phone? A USB adapter (OTG on Android) connects most keyboards.

Step-by-step with troubleshooting: connect a MIDI keyboard to the browser.

What you play with your keyboard

Chords, beginner to pro

Major and minor first, up to 13th and altered chords, in all 12 keys.

Both hands

Any voicing counts: root position, inversions, two-hand spreads.

Instant response

MIDI is the fastest input: every note arrives the moment you press it.

Troubleshooting

  • Keyboard not detected? Reconnect the cable, then reload the page. Use Chrome or Edge.
  • Notes doubled or missing? Close other music apps that might hold the MIDI port.
  • No sound needed: the game reads your notes even if the keyboard volume is down.

Why a real keyboard makes you better faster

Every chord you play on a real keyboard trains three things at once: your eyes reading the chord name, your brain turning it into notes, and your hand finding the keys. On a computer keyboard the last step trains the wrong hand shape, so the skill stays in the game. On piano keys it goes straight into your playing.

MIDI also gives the game every detail of what you played, so it can accept any voicing, root position, inversions or two hands spread wide, as long as the right notes are there. That freedom matters: it lets you practise the shapes you will really use in songs, not one fixed pattern.

Common questions

Can I use my computer keyboard to play piano games?

Some games map letters to piano keys, but chords are hard because most computer keyboards block many keys at once. ChordRunner is played on a real piano keyboard by USB, or a piano through the microphone.

How do I connect a MIDI keyboard to a browser game?

Plug it in by USB and open the game in Chrome or Edge, which support Web MIDI. Most keyboards need no driver; ChordRunner detects the keyboard when you play a note.

Does it work with a digital piano?

Yes. Most digital pianos have a USB port that sends MIDI. Connect it like a MIDI keyboard.

What if my keyboard has no USB?

Use a MIDI-to-USB interface for 5-pin MIDI ports, or simply play near the microphone: ChordRunner also recognises chords by sound.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
