When to Learn Barre Chords (and How Long It Takes)

The right time for when to learn barre chords is not a date, it is a set of skills. If your open chords ring clean and your changes are steady, you are ready, usually after two to four months of regular playing.

Four signs you are ready

  • Open chords ring clean without you checking each string.
  • You can change between G, C and D in time.
  • You can play an F with a small barre on two strings, even if it buzzes a bit.
  • Your fingertips no longer hurt after fifteen minutes.

Why not earlier?

A barre needs strength in the hand and a relaxed thumb, and both come from months of open chords. Starting too early often leads to squeezing hard, sore wrists and giving up. A few weeks on power chords first trains the same moving hand shape with less effort.

How long until they sound clean

Expect two to six weeks before a full E-shape barre rings on all six strings, and a few months before you can change into it in time. It is the slowest skill on beginner guitar, and that is normal, not a sign you lack talent.

Start where it is easy

Begin the E shape at the 5th fret (A major), where the strings are softer, and slide it toward the 1st fret over the weeks. When the shapes hold, test them: ChordRunner hears your guitar through the microphone and sends chord symbols such as F, Bm or C#m that only barre chords can play comfortably.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

When should I learn barre chords?

When your open chords ring clean and you can change between them in time, usually after two to four months of regular practice.

How long does it take to learn barre chords?

About two to six weeks for a clean shape and a few months to change into barre chords in time.

Should I learn power chords or barre chords first?

Power chords. They use the same moving hand position with less pressure and make the first barre chords easier.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is everything in the demo?
