A Flat Major Chord on Guitar (Ab)
The A flat major chord on guitar (Ab) uses the notes Ab, C, Eb. It is a barre chord: the index finger presses all the strings at fret 4. Strum all six strings. Below: the diagram, which finger goes where, a second shape and the chords that go with it.

| 6th string (low E) | fret 4: Ab |
|---|---|
| 5th string (A) | fret 6: Eb |
| 4th string (D) | fret 6: Ab |
| 3rd string (G) | fret 5: C |
| 2nd string (B) | fret 4: Eb |
| 1st string (high E) | fret 4: Ab |
From Ab to Abm only one thing changes: 3rd string (G): fret 5 → fret 4.
A short Ab routine
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Lift the hand, then land all fingers together. Repeat ten times.
- Change from Ab to Db and back for a minute; then add Eb.
Common Ab problems
- A string buzzes? Press right behind the fret, not on top of it.
- Pick the strings one by one: the silent one shows which finger to lift a little.
- Hurts at first? Normal. Five minutes a day toughens the fingertips in a couple of weeks.
Make Ab automatic
ChordRunner listens to your guitar: when Ab appears, strum it and your runner jumps. The game shows the chord symbol only, so you learn to find the shape yourself. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

What notes are in the Ab guitar chord?
A flat major has three notes: Ab, C, Eb. On the guitar some of them are doubled on different strings, so all six (or five) strings sound like one chord.
Which fingers do I use for Ab?
Index finger: across the strings (barre), fret 4, ring finger: 5th string (A), fret 6, little finger: 4th string (D), fret 6, middle finger: 3rd string (G), fret 5.
Can I practise Ab with the microphone?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone, and also a USB MIDI keyboard. It shows the chord symbol Ab, not the diagram, and checks the notes you strum.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
