C Minor Chord on Guitar (Cm)
The C minor chord on guitar (Cm) uses the notes C, Eb, G. It is a barre chord: the index finger presses all the strings at fret 3. Strum from the 5th string down. Below: the diagram, which finger goes where, a second shape and the chords that go with it.

The C minor guitar chord, finger by finger
Fingers and frets
- Index: across the strings (barre), fret 3
- Ring: 4th string (D), fret 5
- Little: 3rd string (G), fret 5
- Middle: 2nd string (B), fret 4
Which strings to strum
x35543: × = do not play, 0 = open string.
If Cm does not sound clean
- A string buzzes? Press right behind the fret, not on top of it.
- A string is muted? Arch your fingers so they touch only their own string.
- Hurts at first? Normal. Five minutes a day toughens the fingertips in a couple of weeks.
Cm string by string
| 5th string (A) | fret 3: C |
|---|---|
| 4th string (D) | fret 5: G |
| 3rd string (G) | fret 5: C |
| 2nd string (B) | fret 4: Eb |
| 1st string (high E) | fret 3: G |
A short Cm routine
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Take the hand off and put the whole shape back at once, ten times in a row.
- Switch between Cm and Eb for one minute, then try Fm.
Practise Cm with the microphone
ChordRunner listens to your guitar: when Cm appears, strum it and your runner jumps. The game shows the chord symbol only, so you learn to find the shape yourself. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

What notes are in the Cm guitar chord?
C minor has three notes: C, Eb, G. On the guitar some of them are doubled on different strings, so all six (or five) strings sound like one chord.
Which fingers do I use for Cm?
Index finger: across the strings (barre), fret 3, ring finger: 4th string (D), fret 5, little finger: 3rd string (G), fret 5, middle finger: 2nd string (B), fret 4.
Can I practise Cm with the microphone?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone, and also a USB MIDI keyboard. It shows the chord symbol Cm, not the diagram, and checks the notes you strum.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
