Challenge Your Friends With Chords
Challenge your friends with chords, even when you are not online at the same time: finish a run in ChordRunner, share it in the chat as a record to beat, and anyone can try to beat it on their own piano, MIDI keyboard or guitar.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
How a chord challenge works
- Play a run of at least one minute.
- Share it in the chat: it becomes a record to beat.
- A friend takes the challenge in the same mode.
- They get two attempts and must play at least as long as you, and do better.
Live match or challenge?
A live room puts everyone on the same chords at the same moment. A challenge works at any time: you set the record now, your friends answer when they can. Both are fair, because everyone plays the same mode.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoWhy challenges keep you practising
A record to beat gives every practice session a goal. You replay a mode not to tick a box, but to get ahead of a friend, and your chord changes get faster without noticing.
Any instrument
Answer a challenge on a USB MIDI keyboard, or on a piano or guitar through the microphone. The record shows the result, not the instrument.
What makes a fair challenge
- Same mode: the challenger plays exactly the mode of the record.
- Same length: a short lucky run cannot beat a long one.
- Accuracy counts: wrong and missed chords pull the result down.
- Two attempts, then the result stays.
Before your first match
- Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
- Plug in a USB MIDI keyboard (detected automatically) or allow the microphone for a piano or guitar.
- Pick the chord level for the room: from major and minor triads up to 13th chords.
- Any voicing counts: root position, inversions or open shapes.
Common questions
How do I challenge a friend with chords?
Finish a run of at least one minute in ChordRunner and share it in the chat. It becomes a record to beat that friends can take on.
How many attempts does a challenger get?
Two. To win they must play at least as long as the original run and do better.
Can I answer a challenge on guitar?
Yes. Challenges work with a USB MIDI keyboard or a piano or guitar through the microphone.
What happens if my friend beats the record?
Their result becomes the new best, and you can answer with a new run of your own: the back-and-forth is what keeps you practising.
