A Music Game to Play With Friends, on Real Instruments
Looking for a music game to play with friends? In ChordRunner you all play real instruments: open a room, share the code, and every chord appears for everyone at once. Play it on a piano, a MIDI keyboard or a guitar, from any browser.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
What you need
- A browser on a computer, tablet or phone (Chrome or Edge).
- An instrument: USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar near the microphone.
- Friends with the 4-digit room code.
A game night with real music
It is not a quiz about songs: you play the chords yourselves. Each right chord keeps your runner going, the leaderboard updates live, and at the end you see who was fastest and most accurate.
A Music Game to Play With Friends, on Real Instruments
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoMixed levels, same room
Friends who play at different levels still have fun together: chords stay readable as symbols, any voicing counts, and a beginner on guitar can share the room with a keyboard player.
Every week, a community event
Besides private rooms there is a weekly community event, where players around the world work towards a shared target.
Ideas for a game night
- Warm-up round: major and minor chords only, so everyone starts on equal terms.
- Swap instruments: the guitarist plays keys and the pianist plays guitar for one round.
- Handicap round: the strongest player uses only seventh chords.
- Final: the two best players face off while the others watch the leaderboard.
Before your first match
- Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
- Plug in a USB MIDI keyboard (detected automatically) or allow the microphone for a piano or guitar.
- Pick the chord level for the room: from major and minor triads up to 13th chords.
- Any voicing counts: root position, inversions or open shapes.
Common questions
Is there a music game I can play with friends on real instruments?
Yes. ChordRunner rooms let friends play the same chords at the same time on a piano, MIDI keyboard or guitar, with a live leaderboard.
Do my friends need to install anything?
No. Everyone joins from the browser with the 4-digit room code.
Can we play with different instruments?
Yes. Piano and keyboard players use MIDI or the microphone, guitarists use the microphone; everyone answers the same chord symbols.
How many people can play together?
Everyone who has the room code can join from their own device; each player needs their own instrument and browser.
Is playing with friends included in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Live multiplayer is an advanced feature in ChordRunner Premium.
