Playing Chords on a 61-Key Keyboard
A 61-key keyboard has five octaves, from C to C, which is plenty for playing chords with both hands. The trick is knowing where things go: chords in the right hand around middle C, bass notes in the left hand one or two octaves below.

- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
The layout in one minute
- 61 keys = 5 octaves + 1 key, usually C2 to C7.
- Middle C (C4) is the third C from the left on most 61-key boards.
- The two groups of black keys repeat every octave: C sits just left of the group of two.
Where to put each hand
- Right hand: triads and 7th chords between middle C and the next C up. They sound clear and not shrill there.
- Left hand: root notes or octaves in the second octave from the left. Below that, chords get muddy.
- Leave a gap of about an octave between the hands.
Playing Chords on a 61-Key Keyboard
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoWhat 61 keys cannot do
Some classical pieces use notes below or above five octaves, and wide two-hand voicings sometimes run out of room. For songs, accompaniment and chord practice, 61 keys are rarely a limit.
Practise chords on it
Plug your 61-key keyboard into a computer by USB and ChordRunner detects it automatically in Chrome or Edge. Chord names arrive and you play them in any inversion, in the right-hand zone above, while every note is checked.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
How many octaves is a 61 key keyboard?
Five octaves plus one key, usually from C to C.
Where is middle C on a 61 key keyboard?
On most models it is the third C from the left, near the centre.
Is 61 keys enough to learn piano?
Yes for chords, songs and most beginner pieces. Some classical repertoire needs 76 or 88 keys.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
