E Flat Diminished Triad Inversions on Guitar: 12 Shapes
The E flat diminished triad on guitar does not need six strings. Three notes, Eb, Gb and Bbb, on three strings give you Ebdim anywhere on the neck, in root position, 1st and 2nd inversion.

Same chord, different bottom note
An inversion just reorders Eb, Gb and Bbb. Bottom note Eb: root position. Bottom note Gb: 1st inversion. Bottom note Bbb: 2nd inversion.
Tense and unstable: it wants to move to the next chord.
How to move between the shapes
On the G-B-e strings, the shapes go up the neck in this order: 2nd inversion (fret 4) → root position (fret 8) → 1st inversion (fret 11). The top notes along the way are Gb, Bbb, Eb.
Around fret 8, without moving the hand: G-B-e strings 8-7-5; D-G-B strings 7-8-7; A-D-G strings 9-7-8; E-A-D strings 5-6-4.
Twelve Ebdim shapes, string set by string set
Start with the top three strings: the shapes are small and the top note is clear. Then move the same idea to the lower sets.

A short Ebdim triad routine
- Start with the G-B-e strings only: three shapes, one minute each.
- Connect the shapes up and down the G-B-e strings, four strums per shape.
- Stay near fret 8 and find Ebdim on two different string sets.
- Last, switch between Ebdim and another triad in the same area of the neck.
Small daily sessions work best: shapes stick by repetition.

Train chord changes on your guitar
In ChordRunner chord names come one after another and the microphone checks every chord you play, open shape, barre or triad. It runs in the browser.
Play the demoCommon questions
How do you play Ebdim triads on the top strings?
On the G, B and high E strings: 2nd inversion 2-4-2; Root position 8-7-5; 1st inversion 11-10-11. Play only those three strings.
Which Ebdim triad shape is the easiest?
Usually the lowest one on the top strings, 2-4-2, because it sits near the nut.
What does a Ebdim triad sound like?
Tense and unstable: it wants to move to the next chord.
Can I practise Ebdim with a game that listens to my guitar?
Yes. ChordRunner hears your guitar through the microphone and checks the chord in any shape or inversion. A USB MIDI keyboard works too.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
