A One-Hour Guitar Practice Routine (and a 20-Minute Version)

A good guitar practice routine spends most of its time on what you cannot do yet and finishes with something fun. Here is a one-hour plan in six blocks, with a twenty-minute version for busy days.

The one-hour plan

  • 0 to 5 min: warm-up. Slow chromatic finger exercise, then each chord you know once.
  • 5 to 20 min: chord changes. Your three hardest pairs, one minute each, twice.
  • 20 to 30 min: one technique: barre, strumming pattern or picking.
  • 30 to 45 min: a song, in sections, slowly first.
  • 45 to 55 min: new material: one new chord or one new song section.
  • 55 to 60 min: a game round or free playing to end on a high.

The 20-minute version

  • 3 min warm-up.
  • 7 min chord changes.
  • 7 min song.
  • 3 min game round.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.

Adjust it as you improve

When a chord change stops being hard, replace it with the next hardest. Every two weeks, look at the plan again: the blocks stay, the content moves forward. Write what you practised; a short log shows progress that you do not feel day to day.

A game for the last block

ChordRunner fits the last five minutes: chord symbols arrive in random order, the microphone hears your guitar, and the runner only jumps when the chord is right. It checks the same changes you trained in the first block, now under pressure.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

What is a good 1 hour guitar practice routine?

Warm-up, 15 minutes of chord changes, 10 of one technique, 15 of a song, 10 of new material and a few minutes of fun to finish.

How should a beginner structure guitar practice?

Short and daily: warm-up, hardest chord changes, one song, then something fun. Twenty minutes is enough.

Is one hour of guitar practice a day enough?

For most players it is plenty, if it is focused. Two shorter sessions often work better than one long one.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is everything in the demo?
