How Much Should a Beginner Practice Guitar?
How much should a beginner practice guitar? Fifteen to thirty minutes a day, ideally split into two short sessions in the first weeks while your fingertips toughen up. Daily practice matters more than long sessions, because chord changes improve with frequent repetition.

Your fingertips set the first limit
In the first two or three weeks, fingertips get sore after about fifteen minutes. That is normal. Two sessions of ten to fifteen minutes, morning and evening, let the skin recover and still give your hands two chances a day to learn.
Split a 20-minute session
- 3 minutes: tune up and strum each chord you know once, slowly.
- 7 minutes: the two hardest chord changes, back and forth.
- 7 minutes: a song or progression at a steady tempo.
- 3 minutes: a quick game round with chords in random order.

Play the demoSigns you are practising too much
- Pain in the wrist or forearm, not only the fingertips.
- Squeezing harder as you get tired.
- Losing focus and repeating mistakes. Stop, and come back later.
Short sessions that count
A round of ChordRunner takes a few minutes. It listens to your acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone and sends chord symbols in random order, so even five minutes on a busy day is focused work on the changes that matter.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
How much should a beginner practice guitar?
About 15 to 30 minutes a day. In the first weeks, two short sessions are easier on the fingertips than one long one.
Is 15 minutes of guitar a day enough?
Yes, for steady progress, if the time goes to chord changes and one song rather than random playing.
Should I practise guitar if my fingers hurt?
Sore fingertips are normal early on; take a break when it gets sharp and come back later. Pain in the wrist or forearm means you should stop and relax your grip.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
