Fm7 inversions on the keyboard
Move F up an octave for the 1st inversion, then Ab for the 2nd, then C for the 3rd.
Root position: F Ab C Eb
1st inversion: Ab C Eb F
2nd inversion: C Eb F Ab
3rd inversion: Eb F Ab C
Fm7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | F | Ab | C | Eb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play F alone in the left hand and Ab C Eb in the right.
The light version of Fm7
Drop the fifth and keep F Ab Eb: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Fm7".
Fm7 compared with the other 7th chords on F
Play the four in a row and listen to each colour.
Fm7 in keys and progressions
- Fm7 is the ii chord of Eb major, the iii of Db major and the vi of Ab major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7.
- Fm7 has the same notes as Ab6 (Ab C Eb F): with F in the bass it is Fm7, with Ab in the bass it is Ab6.
A 5-minute Fm7 routine
- Play F, Ab, C, Eb slowly in root position and say "Fm7" each time.
- Walk up through the inversions (Ab C Eb F, C Eb F Ab, Eb F Ab C) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7 until the change into and out of Fm7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
Short daily rounds fix Fm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
