F9 and Am7b5

Above the root F sit four notes that form Am7b5: A C Eb G. A pianist can play F with the left hand and Am7b5 with the right, and the result is F9.

Make F9 automatic

  1. Find F, then add the other notes one at a time: F, A, C, Eb and G.
  2. Play F7, then F9, then F7 again, and hear what the 9th adds to the seventh.
  3. Try F9 in a rootless shape with the 3rd on the bottom, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
  4. Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.

Come back to F9 tomorrow: short daily sessions beat one long one.

Common questions

How do you play F9 on the piano?

Press F, A, C, Eb and G together. Left hand plays F Eb (fingers 5 and 1), right hand A C G (1, 2, 4).

Is F9 the same as Am7b5?

Not quite: Am7b5 (A C Eb G) is only the upper part of F9. Add F underneath and you have the full F9.

Where is F9 used?

F9 is the V chord of Bb major: it pulls home to Bb. Many pianists play F9 whenever F7 appears, because the 9th makes the same pull sound richer.

Can I practise F9 with a MIDI keyboard or a real piano?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic or digital piano works through the microphone. The game checks that F, A, C, Eb and G sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
