A minor seventh chord is a minor triad with a flat seventh stacked on top, root, minor third, perfect fifth and minor seventh, so Cm7 is C, Eb, G and Bb. It is softer than a plain minor triad and mellower than a dominant 7th, the smooth, slightly wistful sound that pop, soul and jazz reach for constantly.

A plain minor triad can sound stark. Add the flat seventh and it relaxes: the extra note softens the edge and gives the chord a warm, seated quality that never feels sad so much as thoughtful. That is why the minor 7th is everywhere modern harmony lives, it is minor with the tension taken off.
Its most famous job is the ii chord in a jazz ii-V-I: Dm7 leading to G7 leading to Cmaj7 is the single most common progression in the standards repertoire, and the m7 is where it begins. Soul and neo-soul lean on m7s and 9ths for that smooth, floating groove, and countless pop songs use one to make a minor chord glow instead of glower.

The formula, and a few to know first
Every minor 7th is the minor triad plus the flat seventh. Learn the formula once and all 12 follow. Start with these three:
- Dm7 = D F A C. The ii chord of C major and the start of a ii-V-I.
- Am7 = A C E G. All white keys; the easiest m7 to find.
- Em7 = E G B D. The iii chord of C, smooth and common in pop.

m7 versus the other sevenths
The three common sevenths differ by just two notes near the top of the chord. A minor 7th has a minor third and a flat seventh (mellow). Raise the third and you get a dominant 7th (tense). Raise the seventh instead and you get a major 7th (calm and lush). Because they look so similar on paper, telling them apart by ear is a real skill, worth pairing with chord recognition practice.
