Aadd9 Chord on Piano (A Add 9)
The A add 9 chord (Aadd9) uses the piano keys A, C#, E and B: the major triad A plus the 9th, B, with no seventh in between. Expect a sound that is wide and shiny, a major chord with a ring on top.

Aadd9 and Asus2
Take Asus2 (A B E) and add the third C#: you have Aadd9. That is why Aadd9 still sounds major, while Asus2 does not.
Building Aadd9 from A
Start from A, which you may already know, and change one thing: add B, the 9th, an octave plus a whole step above A.
Start chord: A
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from A |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | root | 0 |
| C# | 3 | major 3rd | 4 |
| E | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
| B | 9 | major 9th | 14 |
Ways to place Aadd9 on the keys

2nd inversion: E A B C#
Fingering
| Right hand | A B C# E | 1 2 3 5 |

A short Aadd9 routine
- Find A, then add the other notes one at a time: A, C#, E and B.
- Play A, then Aadd9, then A again, and hear what the 9th adds on top.
- Try Aadd9 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Last, meet Aadd9 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Come back to Aadd9 tomorrow: short daily sessions beat one long one.
