A second name for the same keys
Absus2 and Ebsus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from Ab and you read Absus2; start from Eb and the same keys read Ebsus4. The bass note decides the name.
Where Absus2 is used
- Absus2 works in the keys where Ab already lives: Ab major, Eb major and Db major.
- It often comes back to Ab or slides to Abm, because without a third it can lean either way.
A short Absus2 routine
- Find Ab, then add the other notes one at a time: Ab, Bb and Eb.
- Switch between Ab and Absus2 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Try Absus2 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Keep each session short and frequent and Absus2 will become automatic.
