Left-hand C: shapes and fingers
Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. All 3 notes are white keys, so the hand lies flat.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | C E G | 5 3 1 |
| 1st inversion | E G C | 5 3 1 |
| 2nd inversion | G C E | 5 2 1 |
Ways to accompany with C
Each pattern uses only notes of C, so none of them can sound wrong.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | C+E+G | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Broken chord (low, high, middle, high) | C G E G | soft verses, piano solos |
| Arpeggio up and down | C E G E | flowing accompaniment, 3/4 or 6/8 |
| Octave bass | C+C | a heavy bass under a loud melody |
| Walk up the chord | C E G C | a moving bass line between two chords |
A progression for the left hand: C → F → G → C
The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| C | C E G (Root position) | starting chord |
| F | C F A (2nd inversion) | C |
| G | B D G (1st inversion) | new position |
| C | C E G (Root position) | G |
Add the right hand
Over C, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes C E G; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
Keep the right hand above middle C so the two hands never crowd the same keys.
A left-hand routine for C
- Find C below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on C, E and G.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; broken chord; arpeggio up and down; octave bass; walk up the chord.
- Play C → F → G → C slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.

Play the demoCommon questions
What fingers do I use for C in the left hand?
Root position 5 3 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 1, 2nd inversion 5 2 1.
Which C position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In C → F → G → C the hand plays C = C E G; F = C F A; G = B D G; C = C E G.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for C?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note C and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 3 5.
Does a game count C if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes C, E and G, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
