Ways to accompany with C#maj7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | C#+E#+G#+B# | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Walk up the chord | C# E# G# B# | linking chords, a bass that sings |
| Root and fifth | C#+G# | rock and pop, a full bass with two fingers |
| Octave bass | C#+C# | loud endings, big chorus |
| Shell: root and seventh | C#+B# | comping under a singer |
Where the left hand plays C#maj7
Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: C# G# (finger 5, 2). White keys: E# B# (finger 3, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | C# E# G# B# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | E# G# B# C# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | G# B# C# E# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | B# C# E# G# | 5 4 2 1 |
What the right hand plays over C#maj7
Over C#maj7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes C# E# G# B#; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.
Change from C#maj7 without jumping
Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| C#maj7 | C# E# G# B# (Root position) | starting chord |
| A#m7 | C# E# G# A# (1st inversion) | C# E# G# |
| D#m7 | C# D# F# A# (3rd inversion) | C# A# |
| G#7 | B# D# F# G# (1st inversion) | D# F# |
Make the left hand automatic on C#maj7
- Place finger 5 on C#, then let the other fingers fall on E#, G# and B#.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; walk up the chord; root and fifth; octave bass; shell: root and seventh.
- Play C#maj7 → A#m7 → D#m7 → G#7 slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Ten minutes a day for one week is usually enough for one left-hand chord to feel natural.

What fingers do I use for C#maj7 in the left hand?
Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.
Which C#maj7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In C#maj7 → A#m7 → D#m7 → G#7 the hand plays C#maj7 = C# E# G# B#; A#m7 = C# E# G# A#; D#m7 = C# D# F# A#; G#7 = B# D# F# G#.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for C#maj7?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note C# and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 2 3 5.
Can I practise left-hand chords with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. It accepts C#maj7 in any octave, so you can train the left hand alone.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
