C#7 for the left hand, position by position
Pick the position by what comes next: the one that shares the most keys with the next chord is the right one. Black keys: C# G# (finger 5, 2). White keys: E# B (finger 3, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | C# E# G# B | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | E# G# B C# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | G# B C# E# | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | B C# E# G# | 5 4 2 1 |
From block chord to moving bass on C#7
Each pattern uses only notes of C#7, so none of them can sound wrong.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | C#+E#+G#+B | slow songs, ballads, the first week |
| Root, third and seventh | C#+E#+B | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Walk up the chord | C# E# G# B | a moving bass line between two chords |
| Root and fifth | C#+G# | rock and pop, a full bass with two fingers |
| Shell: root and seventh | C#+B | comping under a singer |
A progression for the left hand: C#7 → F# → B → C#7
Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| C#7 | C# E# G# B (Root position) | starting chord |
| F# | C# F# A# (2nd inversion) | C# |
| B | D# F# B (1st inversion) | F# |
| C#7 | C# E# G# B (Root position) | B |
Both hands on C#7
Put C# E# G# B in the right hand, an octave higher, and you hear the full C#7 with a clear bass.
Try the right hand in another position of C#7 while the left holds root position.
Practise left-hand C#7
- Place finger 5 on C#, then let the other fingers fall on E#, G# and B.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; root, third and seventh; walk up the chord; root and fifth; shell: root and seventh.
- Play C#7 → F# → B → C#7 slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.
Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

What fingers do I use for C#7 in the left hand?
Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.
Which C#7 position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In C#7 → F# → B → C#7 the hand plays C#7 = C# E# G# B; F# = C# F# A#; B = D# F# B; C#7 = C# E# G# B.
Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for C#7?
Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note C# and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 2 3 5.
Can I practise left-hand chords with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. It accepts C#7 in any octave, so you can train the left hand alone.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
