Left-hand Dm: shapes and fingers

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. All 3 notes are white keys, so the hand lies flat.

Dm → Gm → A → Dm with a quiet left hand

Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.

Make the left hand automatic on Dm

  1. Place finger 5 on D, then let the other fingers fall on F and A.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; arpeggio up and down; octave bass.
  3. Loop Dm → Gm → A → Dm with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

From block chord to moving bass on Dm

Each pattern uses only notes of Dm, so none of them can sound wrong.

PatternNotesGood for
Block chordD+F+Aslow songs, ballads, the first week
Arpeggio up and downD F A Fwaltzes and slow ballads
Octave bassD+Dloud endings, big chorus
Walk up the chordD F A Dlinking chords, a bass that sings
Broken chord (low, high, middle, high)D A F Asoft verses, piano solos

Add the right hand

The right hand can play the melody using D F A: those keys always fit over Dm.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

Common questions

How do you play Dm on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on D below middle C and play D, F and A with fingers 5 3 1.

Which Dm position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In Dm → Gm → A → Dm the hand plays Dm = D F A; Gm = D G Bb; A = C# E A; Dm = D F A.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Dm?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Dm with 1 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Does a game count Dm if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes D, F and A, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
