D7 Chord on Piano (D Dominant 7th)

D dominant 7th (D7) is spelled D - F# - A - C. It sounds like D with an extra C, the note that gives it its restless dominant colour. Here you will find its inversions, both hands and the chords it belongs with.

Where D7 goes

  • D7 is the V7 chord of G major and of G minor: it pulls into G / Gm.
  • In a ii-V-I in G major it is the middle chord: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7.
  • Between F# and C there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. Ab7 has the same two notes, so it can replace D7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7 · D

D7 inversions on the keyboard

A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still D7.

D7 D F# A C

Root position: D F# A C

D7 F# A C D

1st inversion: F# A C D

D7 A C D F#

2nd inversion: A C D F#

D7 C D F# A

3rd inversion: C D F# A

A 5-minute D7 routine

  1. Play D, F#, A, C slowly in root position and say "D7" each time.
  2. Climb the four positions: D F# A C, then F# A C D, A C D F# and C D F# A, and back down.
  3. Play it in its ii-V-I, Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7, four beats per chord.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

Short daily rounds fix D7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

Playing D7 with each hand

HandDF#AC
Right hand1 (thumb)235 (little)
Left hand5 (little)321 (thumb)

Play D7 broken first, D, F#, A, C one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.

D7 without the fifth

D7 D F# C

Drop the fifth and keep D F# C: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "D7".
