Emaj7 E G# B D#

Left-hand Emaj7: shapes and fingers

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: G# D# (finger 3, 1). White keys: E B (finger 5, 2). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Change from Emaj7 without jumping

Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.

Practise left-hand Emaj7

  1. Place finger 5 on E, then let the other fingers fall on G#, B and D#.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; octave bass; shell: root and seventh.
  3. Loop Emaj7 → C#m7 → F#m7 → B7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.

Ten minutes a day for one week is usually enough for one left-hand chord to feel natural.

From block chord to moving bass on Emaj7

Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.

PatternNotesGood for
Block chordE+G#+B+D#learning a new song, hymns
Octave bassE+Ea heavy bass under a loud melody
Shell: root and seventhE+D#comping under a singer
Root, third and seventhE+G#+D#jazz and soul, the full colour in three keys
Root and fifthE+Brock and pop, a full bass with two fingers

Add the right hand

The right hand can play the melody using E G# B D#: those keys always fit over Emaj7.

Keep the right hand above middle C so the two hands never crowd the same keys.

Common questions

What fingers do I use for Emaj7 in the left hand?

Root position 5 3 2 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 2 1, 2nd inversion 5 3 2 1.

Which Emaj7 position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In Emaj7 → C#m7 → F#m7 → B7 the hand plays Emaj7 = E G# B D#; C#m7 = E G# B C#; F#m7 = E F# A C#; B7 = D# F# A B.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Emaj7?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Emaj7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Does a game count Emaj7 if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes E, G#, B and D#, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
