A second name for the same keys

E6 has exactly the same notes as C#m7. Put E in the bass and it sounds like a major chord with a sweet 6th; put C# in the bass and it is a minor seventh.

A short E6 routine

  1. Say the notes out loud while you press them: E, G#, B and C#.
  2. Play E, then E6, then E again, and hear what the added 6th brings to the chord.
  3. Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
  4. Last, meet E6 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.

Keep each session short and frequent and E6 will become automatic.

When to play E6

  • E6 is a home chord: it replaces E at the end of a song in E major.
  • It is also the IV chord in B major, a soft colour before going home.
