Esus2 in every position
Same notes, different order. Pick the position closest to the chord you just played.
Root position: E F# B
1st inversion: F# B E
2nd inversion: B E F#
Which fingers
| Right hand | E F# B | 1 2 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | E F# B | 5 4 1 |
Esus2 and Bsus4
Esus2 and Bsus4 are the same three notes. Stack them from E and you read Esus2; start from B and the same keys read Bsus4. The bass note decides the name.
How Esus2 is built
Every chord is a recipe of scale steps. For Esus2 the recipe is 1 2 5, counted from E.
Start chord: E
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from E |
|---|---|---|---|
| E | 1 | root | 0 |
| F# | 2 | major 2nd | 2 |
| B | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
Practise Esus2 in four steps
- Find E, then add the other notes one at a time: E, F# and B.
- Play E, then Esus2, then E again, and hear what the missing third does to the colour.
- Try Esus2 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
- Last, meet Esus2 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Five minutes a day is enough to make Esus2 feel easy.
When to play Esus2
- Esus2 works in the keys where E already lives: E major, B major and A major.
- It often comes back to E or slides to Em, because without a third it can lean either way.
