Five left-hand patterns on F

Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.

PatternNotesGood for
Block chordF+A+Clearning a new song, hymns
Broken chord (low, high, middle, high)F C A Csoft verses, piano solos
Arpeggio up and downF A C Aflowing accompaniment, 3/4 or 6/8

Where the left hand plays F

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. All 3 notes are white keys, so the hand lies flat.

What the right hand plays over F

Over F, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes F A C; scale notes between them work as passing notes.

Try the right hand in another position of F while the left holds root position.

Change from F without jumping

The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.

A left-hand routine for F

  1. Find F below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on F, A and C.
  2. Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; broken chord; arpeggio up and down; octave bass; walk up the chord.
  3. Loop F → Bb → C → F with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

Common questions

How do you play F on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on F below middle C and play F, A and C with fingers 5 3 1.

Which F position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In F → Bb → C → F the hand plays F = F A C; Bb = F Bb D; C = E G C; F = F A C.

Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for F?

Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note F and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 3 5.

Does a game count F if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes F, A and C, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
