F#6 and D#m7

F#6 has exactly the same notes as D#m7. Put F# in the bass and it sounds like a major chord with a sweet 6th; put D# in the bass and it is a minor seventh.

Practise F#6 in four steps

  1. Find F#, then add the other notes one at a time: F#, A#, C# and D#.
  2. Play F#, then F#6, then F# again, and hear what the added 6th brings to the chord.
  3. Try F#6 in 1st inversion, the position that sits closest to your last chord.
  4. Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.

Come back to F#6 tomorrow: short daily sessions beat one long one.

Where F#6 is used

  • F#6 is a home chord: it replaces F# at the end of a song in F# major.
  • It is also the IV chord in C# major, a soft colour before going home.
