Left-hand G: shapes and fingers

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. All 3 notes are white keys, so the hand lies flat.

G

From block chord to moving bass on G

Each pattern uses only notes of G, so none of them can sound wrong.

G → C → D → G with a quiet left hand

Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.

Add the right hand

Put G B D in the right hand, an octave higher, and you hear the full G with a clear bass.

Keep the right hand above middle C so the two hands never crowd the same keys.

Make the left hand automatic on G

  1. Find G below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on G, B and D.
  2. Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; arpeggio up and down; octave bass; root and fifth; broken chord.
  3. Loop G → C → D → G with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

Common questions

What fingers do I use for G in the left hand?

Root position 5 3 1, from the bottom note up. 1st inversion 5 3 1, 2nd inversion 5 2 1.

Which G position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In G → C → D → G the hand plays G = G B D; C = G C E; D = F# A D; G = G B D.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for G?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays G with 1 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Can I practise left-hand chords with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. It accepts G in any octave, so you can train the left hand alone.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
