Where the left hand plays Gm

Pick the position by what comes next: the one that shares the most keys with the next chord is the right one. Black keys: Bb (finger 3). White keys: G D (finger 5, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Change from Gm without jumping

The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.

Practise left-hand Gm

  1. Place finger 5 on G, then let the other fingers fall on Bb and D.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; arpeggio up and down; octave bass.
  3. Play Gm → Cm → D → Gm slowly until the change happens without looking down.
  4. Then keep the left hand steady while the right hand plays any chord note: that is the goal.

Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.

Five left-hand patterns on Gm

Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.

PatternNotesGood for
Block chordG+Bb+Dslow songs, ballads, the first week
Arpeggio up and downG Bb D Bbflowing accompaniment, 3/4 or 6/8
Octave bassG+Ga heavy bass under a loud melody

What the right hand plays over Gm

The right hand can play the melody using G Bb D: those keys always fit over Gm.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

Play Gm in ChordRunner

ChordRunner shows a chord symbol and checks the notes you play, in any octave and any position, so a left-hand Gm counts. Plug in a MIDI keyboard or use the microphone with an acoustic piano.

Common questions

How do you play Gm on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on G below middle C and play G, Bb and D with fingers 5 3 1.

Can the left hand play just two notes of Gm?

Yes: root and fifth, G D. It keeps the bass full and leaves the colour to the right hand.

Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for Gm?

Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note G and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 3 5.

Does a game count Gm if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes G, Bb and D, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
