The chord hiding inside Gsus4
The notes of Gsus4 also spell Csus2: start from C and you get root, 2nd and 5th of C. Same keys, two names, and the lowest note picks the one you hear.
How Gsus4 is built
Start from G, which you may already know, and change one thing: raise the third B one half step to C.
Start chord: G
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from G |
|---|---|---|---|
| G | 1 | root | 0 |
| C | 4 | perfect 4th | 5 |
| D | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |

| Left hand | G C D | 5 2 1 |
Practise Gsus4 in four steps
- Find G, then add the other notes one at a time: G, C and D.
- Switch between G and Gsus4 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Last, meet Gsus4 mixed with chords you already know, in an order you did not plan.
Five minutes a day is enough to make Gsus4 feel easy.
Where Gsus4 is used
- The classic move is Gsus4 → G: the 4th C falls one step to the third B and the tension melts.
- You can use it in G major, D major and C major, wherever G itself fits.
