Five left-hand patterns on Abmaj7
Start with the first, add one pattern per day. Count four beats for each.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | Ab+C+Eb+G | learning a new song, hymns |
| Root and fifth | Ab+Eb | driving rhythms, a strong open sound |
| Octave bass | Ab+Ab | a heavy bass under a loud melody |
| Root, third and seventh | Ab+C+G | smooth chord changes in jazz standards |
| Walk up the chord | Ab C Eb G | a moving bass line between two chords |
Abmaj7 for the left hand, position by position
Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: Ab Eb (finger 5, 2). White keys: C G (finger 3, 1). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | Ab C Eb G | 5 3 2 1 |
| 1st inversion | C Eb G Ab | 5 3 2 1 |
| 2nd inversion | Eb G Ab C | 5 3 2 1 |
| 3rd inversion | G Ab C Eb | 5 4 2 1 |
Add the right hand
Put Ab C Eb G in the right hand, an octave higher, and you hear the full Abmaj7 with a clear bass.
Keep the right hand above middle C so the two hands never crowd the same keys.
Abmaj7 → Fm7 → Bbm7 → Eb7 with a quiet left hand
The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| Abmaj7 | Ab C Eb G (Root position) | starting chord |
| Fm7 | Ab C Eb F (1st inversion) | Ab C Eb |
| Bbm7 | Ab Bb Db F (3rd inversion) | Ab F |
| Eb7 | G Bb Db Eb (1st inversion) | Bb Db |
Practise left-hand Abmaj7
- Find Ab below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on Ab, C, Eb and G.
- Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; root and fifth; octave bass.
- Loop Abmaj7 → Fm7 → Bbm7 → Eb7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
- Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.
Ten minutes a day for one week is usually enough for one left-hand chord to feel natural.

How do you play Abmaj7 on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on Ab below middle C and play Ab, C, Eb and G with fingers 5 3 2 1.
Can the left hand play just two notes of Abmaj7?
Yes: root and seventh, Ab G. Root and seventh already say which seventh chord it is; the right hand adds the third.
Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Abmaj7?
Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Abmaj7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.
Does a game count Abmaj7 if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes Ab, C, Eb and G, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
