Abm for the left hand, position by position

Pick the position by what comes next: the one that shares the most keys with the next chord is the right one. Black keys: Ab Eb (finger 5, 1). White keys: Cb (finger 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

What the right hand plays over Abm

Over Abm, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes Ab Cb Eb; scale notes between them work as passing notes.

Keep the right hand above middle C so the two hands never crowd the same keys.

Abm → Dbm → Eb → Abm with a quiet left hand

The table gives the closest position for each chord, so the left hand moves as little as possible.

Practise left-hand Abm

  1. Find Ab below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on Ab, Cb and Eb.
  2. Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; octave bass; walk up the chord; root and fifth; broken chord.
  3. Play Abm → Dbm → Eb → Abm slowly until the change happens without looking down.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.

Common questions

How do you play Abm on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on Ab below middle C and play Ab, Cb and Eb with fingers 5 3 1.

Can the left hand play just two notes of Abm?

Yes: root and fifth, Ab Eb. It keeps the bass full and leaves the colour to the right hand.

Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for Abm?

Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note Ab and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 3 5.

Does a game count Abm if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes Ab, Cb and Eb, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
