Ab7 Ab C Eb Gb

Left-hand Ab7: shapes and fingers

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: Ab Eb Gb (finger 5, 2, 1). White keys: C (finger 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Ways to accompany with Ab7

Each pattern uses only notes of Ab7, so none of them can sound wrong.

Change from Ab7 without jumping

Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.

What the right hand plays over Ab7

The right hand can play the melody using Ab C Eb Gb: those keys always fit over Ab7.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

A left-hand routine for Ab7

  1. Find Ab below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on Ab, C, Eb and Gb.
  2. Play the first three patterns of the table, four bars each: block chord; octave bass; shell: root and seventh.
  3. Loop Ab7 → Db → Gb → Ab7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

Common questions

How do you play Ab7 on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on Ab below middle C and play Ab, C, Eb and Gb with fingers 5 3 2 1.

Can the left hand play just two notes of Ab7?

Yes: root and seventh, Ab Gb. Root and seventh already say which seventh chord it is; the right hand adds the third.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Ab7?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Ab7 with 1 2 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 2 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Does a game count Ab7 if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes Ab, C, Eb and Gb, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
