Building Bb9 from Bb7
Formula 1 3 5 b7 9. Count from Bb and every number is a step of the Bb major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: Bb7
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from Bb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bb | 1 | root | 0 |
| D | 3 | major 3rd | 4 |
| F | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
| Ab | b7 | minor 7th | 10 |
| C | 9 | major 9th | 14 |
Where your hand goes for Bb9
Each picture is still Bb9. Move only the notes that must move.
Both hands: Bb Ab D F C
Rootless, 3rd on the bottom: D F Ab C
Rootless, 7th on the bottom: Ab C D F
Left hand alone: Bb Ab
Hands and fingers
| Left hand | Bb Ab | 5 1 |

| Right hand | D F C | 1 2 4 |
A second name for the same keys
Above the root Bb sit four notes that form Dm7b5: D F Ab C. A pianist can play Bb with the left hand and Dm7b5 with the right, and the result is Bb9.
When to play Bb9
- Bb9 is the V chord of Eb major: it pulls home to Eb.
- Many pianists play Bb9 whenever Bb7 appears, because the 9th makes the same pull sound richer.
Practise Bb9 in four steps
- Find Bb, then add the other notes one at a time: Bb, D, F, Ab and C.
- Switch between Bb7 and Bb9 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and a rootless shape with the 3rd on the bottom, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Keep each session short and frequent and Bb9 will become automatic.
Turn Bb9 into a reflex
Chord symbols arrive one after another and the game checks every note you play, with MIDI or the microphone. Dominant 9ths appear in the later boss challenges, next to major and minor 9ths.
