Left-hand Bm: shapes and fingers

Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: F# (finger 1). White keys: B D (finger 5, 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Change from Bm without jumping

Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.

What the right hand plays over Bm

Over Bm, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes B D F#; scale notes between them work as passing notes.

Try the right hand in another position of Bm while the left holds root position.

Practise left-hand Bm

  1. Find B below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on B, D and F#.
  2. Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; broken chord; arpeggio up and down; walk up the chord; root and fifth.
  3. Play Bm → Em → F# → Bm slowly until the change happens without looking down.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.

Common questions

How do you play Bm on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on B below middle C and play B, D and F# with fingers 5 3 1.

Which Bm position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In Bm → Em → F# → Bm the hand plays Bm = B D F#; Em = B E G; F# = A# C# F#; Bm = B D F#.

Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Bm?

Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Bm with 1 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.

Does a game count Bm if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes B, D and F#, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
