Left-hand Bm: shapes and fingers
Play each position slowly, then name the bottom note: that note is what the listener hears as the bass. Black keys: F# (finger 1). White keys: B D (finger 5, 3). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.
| Position | Notes, bottom up | Fingers |
|---|---|---|
| Root position | B D F# | 5 3 1 |
| 1st inversion | D F# B | 5 3 1 |
| 2nd inversion | F# B D | 5 2 1 |
Five left-hand patterns on Bm
Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.
| Pattern | Notes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Block chord | B+D+F# | learning a new song, hymns |
| Broken chord (low, high, middle, high) | B F# D F# | soft verses, piano solos |
| Arpeggio up and down | B D F# D | flowing accompaniment, 3/4 or 6/8 |
| Walk up the chord | B D F# B | linking chords, a bass that sings |
| Root and fifth | B+F# | driving rhythms, a strong open sound |
Change from Bm without jumping
Each chord takes the position closest to the one before. Notes that two chords share stay under the same finger.
| Chord | Left hand plays | Keys that stay |
|---|---|---|
| Bm | B D F# (Root position) | starting chord |
| Em | B E G (2nd inversion) | B |
| F# | A# C# F# (1st inversion) | new position |
| Bm | B D F# (Root position) | F# |
What the right hand plays over Bm
Over Bm, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes B D F#; scale notes between them work as passing notes.
Try the right hand in another position of Bm while the left holds root position.
Practise left-hand Bm
- Find B below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on B, D and F#.
- Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; broken chord; arpeggio up and down; walk up the chord; root and fifth.
- Play Bm → Em → F# → Bm slowly until the change happens without looking down.
- Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.
Short daily practice wins: the left hand learns by repetition, not by long sessions.
Train Bm against the clock

How do you play Bm on piano with the left hand?
Put finger 5 on B below middle C and play B, D and F# with fingers 5 3 1.
Which Bm position is best for the left hand?
The one closest to the next chord. In Bm → Em → F# → Bm the hand plays Bm = B D F#; Em = B E G; F# = A# C# F#; Bm = B D F#.
Is the left hand the same as the right hand for Bm?
Same notes, mirrored fingers: the right hand plays Bm with 1 3 5, the left hand with 5 3 1, because the little finger sits at the bottom.
Does a game count Bm if I play it low with the left hand?
In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes B, D and F#, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
