B6 Chord on Piano (B Major 6th)

B6 in every position
Same notes, different order. Pick the position closest to the chord you just played.
Root position: B D# F# G#
1st inversion: D# F# G# B
2nd inversion: F# G# B D#
3rd inversion: G# B D# F#
Fingering
| Right hand | B D# F# G# | 1 2 3 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Left hand | B D# F# G# | 5 3 2 1 |
B6 and G#m7
B6 has exactly the same notes as G#m7. Put B in the bass and it sounds like a major chord with a sweet 6th; put G# in the bass and it is a minor seventh.
The formula of B6
Formula 1 3 5 6. Count from B and every number is a step of the B major scale, and a b lowers it by one key.
Start chord: B
| Note | Step | Interval | Keys from B |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | 1 | root | 0 |
| D# | 3 | major 3rd | 4 |
| F# | 5 | perfect 5th | 7 |
| G# | 6 | major 6th | 9 |
A short B6 routine
- Find B, then add the other notes one at a time: B, D#, F# and G#.
- Switch between B and B6 ten times without looking at your hand.
- Alternate root position and 1st inversion, keeping shared notes still.
- Then test it in random order among other chords: recall under time pressure is what sticks.
Come back to B6 tomorrow: short daily sessions beat one long one.
Where B6 is used
- B6 is a home chord: it replaces B at the end of a song in B major.
- It is also the IV chord in F# major, a soft colour before going home.
