Ways to accompany with C7

Same chord, five rhythms. The pattern changes the style more than the notes.

C7 for the left hand, position by position

Finger 5 (little finger) always takes the bottom note. Keep the hand low, near middle C but below it: lower than that the chord gets muddy. Black keys: Bb (finger 1). White keys: C E G (finger 5, 3, 2). Move the hand slightly in so the fingers on black keys do not slip.

Both hands on C7

Over C7, the safest right-hand notes are the chord notes C E G Bb; scale notes between them work as passing notes.

If both hands play the same notes in the same octave the sound gets thick: leave a gap.

Change from C7 without jumping

Do not play every chord in root position: the hand would jump. These positions move one or two keys at a time.

A left-hand routine for C7

  1. Find C below middle C with finger 5 and drop the hand on C, E, G and Bb.
  2. Go through the patterns in the order of the table: block chord; shell: root and seventh; root, third and seventh; root and fifth; octave bass.
  3. Loop C7 → F → Bb → C7 with the positions above, eyes on the music, not on the hand.
  4. Last, add a simple right-hand note on top: the left hand should keep going on its own.

Come back tomorrow and start from the pattern you found hardest today.

Common questions

How do you play C7 on piano with the left hand?

Put finger 5 on C below middle C and play C, E, G and Bb with fingers 5 3 2 1.

Which C7 position is best for the left hand?

The one closest to the next chord. In C7 → F → Bb → C7 the hand plays C7 = C E G Bb; F = C F A; Bb = D F Bb; C7 = C E G Bb.

Why are left-hand fingers different from the right hand for C7?

Because the hand is mirrored: the little finger (5) sits on the bottom note C and the thumb on top. The right hand would play the same notes with 1 2 3 5.

Does a game count C7 if I play it low with the left hand?

In ChordRunner, yes: the game listens for the notes C, E, G and Bb, not for a hand or an octave. Use a USB MIDI keyboard, or the microphone with a real piano.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
